Mister Candy Cane
written by Dan Blakeslee on 11.22.07 (Thanksgiving)
Oh listen to him play, on that old piano dressed in white.
Jingle bells upon his boots sang through the night... sweet silent night.
He took that wooden box, made it stomp like a Christmas parade.
The jumpin', jolly carols that he played made you glad you stayed.
He’s bouncin' on the keys makin' you believe.
Everybody stop and pause to see boogie-woogie Santa Claus.
He’s gotten very skinny from climbin' down the chimney.
He looks more like a candlestick though he says he’s old Saint Nick.
The rhythm over town made the treetops sway and swing.
The pack of goodies on his back he brings are the songs he sings.
So if you’re sliding down the lane where gingerbread houses and sugarplums reign.
Slow your toboggan for a joyous refrain from Mister Candy Cane.
He’s bouncin' on the keys makin' you believe.
Everybody stop and pause to see boogie-woogie Santa Claus.
He’s gotten very skinny from climbin' down the chimney.
He looks more like a candlestick though he says he’s old Saint Nick.

Glowin', Blowin', Jumpin', Swayin', Wishin', Swingin', Dancin', Rockin', Fishin', Laughin', Christmas Tree
written by Dan Blakeslee on 11.24.11
When I came in from a wintry night to warm up by the fire side light.
Something strange I did see while lookin' at the decorations on the tree.
The gingerbread man reached out his hand to Annie elf and began dancin'.
Llama started laughin' loud, pretty soon they had a good crowd.
Glowin', blowin', Christmas tree. I have made a wish on thee.
The ornaments on your branches bright, please bring them to life tonight.
Up high in the tree with a candycane, the nutcracker went fishin’.
Caught the rockinghorse, the three kings crowned, every sweet tooth from the top to the ground.
The airplane is a circlin’ a popcorn strand. The tree is jumpin', swayin' nearly out of its stand.
You can’t help but listen to the birdie that is whistlin', higher than the stars that shine.
Blink, blink went the lights as they hugged the spruce, to the rhythm of the train in the honk of the goose.
Chimney rang that joyous sound, till the red suit man with a beard came down.
Glowin', blowin', Christmas tree. I have made a wish on thee.
The ornaments on your branches bright, please bring them to life tonight.
Glowin', blowin', Christmas tree. I have made a wish on thee.
The ornaments on your branches bright, please bring them to life tonight.

The Somerville Lights
written by Dan Blakeslee on 12.18.11
Take a walk with me this December eve.
Through the neighborhood made of stone and wood.
This city shines just after dark.
When Christmas lights evict the meadowlark.
We’re going out to see the Somerville lights...
Electric stars on the houses gleam.
Roofs are lit with a reindeer team.
Bright colors they tint the frozen snow.
Even traffic lights bring a festive glow.
We’re going out to see the Somerville lights...
Behold that magnificent glow!
A wondrous winterland show!
The enchantment will remain in you.
Bring you warmth and high spirits too.
Watch the jubilee with good company.
Honey you and I are the recipe...
We’re going out to see the Somerville lights...
Behold that magnificent glow!
A wondrous winterland show!

It’s Almost Christmas Morn
written by Dan Blakeslee on 12.25.19
Ridin’ in an open sleigh, bringin’ on the Yuletide cheer.
Sittin' by an open fire, singin’ songs with loved ones near.
Gingerbread bakin' in the pan, trimming the tree, holdin’ hands.
Spreading peace and joy across the land.
The snow is fallin’, jingle bells callin’,
Snow angels on the lawn, it’s almost Christmas morn.
Santa’s gonna come your way, Rudolph’s nose shinin’ bright.
Hangin’ wreaths and candy canes, carols by candlelight.
A magic feelin' in the air, the sound from a marchin’ band is
Spreading peace and joy across the land.
The snow is fallin’, jingle bells callin’,
Snow angels on the lawn, it’s almost Christmas morn.
The snow is fallin’, jingle bells callin’,
Snow angels on the lawn, it’s almost Christmas morn.

To Be An Elf
Written by Dan Blakeslee on 12.21.12
Waitin’ on the man in red I can’t get no sleep,
I’m a-countin’ on him more than I am countin’ sheep.
I know he has eight reindeer that’ll fly him down here soon,
My eyes won’t close I lay here froze staring at the moon.
My parents are a-pleadin', I haven’t slept in weeks.
Grandma is worried I took her cranberry sauce to make my rosy cheeks.
I don’t need no presents or things to fill my shelf,
No sir Santa I just want to be a Christmas elf.
So patiently I’ll wait here in my stocking cap,
If you’d just tie a bell upon it I would take a nap.
My parents are a-pleadin’, I haven’t slept in weeks.
Grandma is worried I took her cranberry sauce to make my rosy cheeks.
Saint Nick you see I’ve got a knack for building all these toys,
Helping you would make me the jolliest of boys.
I think that I’ve been good cause you never gave me coal.
Tell me "yes", change my address, I’ll head for the north pole.
My parents are a-pleadin’, I haven’t slept in weeks.
Grandma is worried I took her cranberry sauce to make my rosy cheeks.

Christmas Tree Calling
written by Dan Blakeslee on 11.02.10
It’s Christmas night, I’m headed outside.
Snow drifts are twinklin', I follow their guide.
And the wind it has told me, no ticket I’ll need.
For mother nature, she has no greed.
And I walked for miles, through the snow and the cold.
When something on Beacon, shown brighter than those houses of gold.
Brighter than houses of gold... than houses of gold...
Than houses of gold... brighter than houses of gold...
I heard a cry in the night, that called out and yearned.
From a Christmas tree tossed, before it had turned.
It’s still had it tinsel, what a glorious find.
It’s the poor who are blessed, when the rich they are blind.
Once upon my back, how it sparkled and glowed.
And pulled me from the darkness, which made my house cold.
Brighter than houses of gold... than houses of gold...
Than houses of gold... brighter than houses of gold...
And it lasted all winter, and it stays with me still.
As a pauper I tell it, to bring you good will!
Brighter than houses of gold... than houses of gold...
Than houses of gold... brighter than houses of gold...

LET'S START AGAIN
written by Dan Blakeslee 01.01.10
Bring us a year of remembrance.
May the land be flooded with change.
The hour is swiftly passin'
So let us rearrange.
Be careful of words that are spoken.
Don't speak with hate on your tongue.
This is a song for the ages.
One for the old and the young.
Let's start again. United as women and men,
Let's start again. Act as leaders with a powerful pen.
Bring us a year of remembrance.
Grab a hammer and put down your gun.
No matter the hue of your collar,
Roll your sleeves with the New Year sun.
Awaken with hope and forgiveness.
Surprise us with news that is good.
Together let's move towards a difference,
Whether you work in policy or wood.
Let's start again. United as women and men,
Let's start again. Act as leaders with a powerful pen.
